Visit to corta katarina vinery on Pelješac

The Pelješac peninsula is halfway between two Adriatic pearls, Split and Dubrovnik. The second-largest peninsula in Dalmatia enjoys a splendid Mediterranean climate, which has made it an ideal site for vineyards and wine making. Pelješac is also famous for its salt pans, which many depended on for centuries, including Dubrovnik and its celebrated Republic. The ancient defensive rampart completes a trilogy of Pelješac symbols. The natives like to call their peninsula "nature in its primeval form."

Ston and Pelješac Tour (5h)

The tour starts from Dubrovnik. We drive northwest along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, passing through various small villages and enjoying the views of Elaphiti islands. In about one hour we come to the peninsula Pelješac and stop in a little town called Ston, famous for several reasons. We stroll along medieval streets and climb up the Walls of Ston, second largest fortification system in the world (5.5 km long). The walls were built in 14th century and were meant to protect the salt pans, which are our next stop. We take a walk through the oldest salt pans in Europe (still in function) to learn more about production and economic importance of salt in the past. We continue to Mali Ston, small sister village of Ston, well known for oyster production and family owned seafood restaurants. We visit oyster beds by boat with a local private oyster producer to get to know more about shellfish cultivation in Mali Ston Bay.

Optional

Dubrovnik summer festival

It was at the beginning of the 50s, when there were many theatrical and musical events springing up all over Europe, that the Dubrovnik Summer Festival was founded. However, the idea of harmonizing the renaissance and baroque atmosphere of Dubrovnik and the living spirit of drama and music, actually derived from the intellectual way of life of the city itself, from its living creative tradition, which has bestowed upon Croatian cultural and scholarly history, especially in theatre and literature, many great names and works, and kept it continually in touch with contemporary currents in western Europe.

The works of Marin Držić (some say that the great Shakespeare took his style of writing) Ivan Gundulić and Ivo Vojnović were to become a mainstay of the drama programme, then, while with the understanding of the idea of the importance of ambience, which is the principal distinguishing feature of the Dubrovnik Festival, the specific theatrical values of the wider Croatian dramatic heritage gradually became revealed, as did the adaptability of the classics of European dramatic art to the squares, palaces, towers and parks of Dubrovnik.

Above all Shakespeare, but also Goldoni, the Greek tragedians, Molière, Corneille and Goethe became yardsticks of the traditionalist nature of the festival.

The ambience determined, not only the repertoire, but also the organization of the Festival, and that is why Dubrovnik Summer Festival is so unique in the world.

Among numerous artists who performed at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, contributing to its prestige worldwide, it is difficult to single out anyone in particular.

This year we celebrate 70. jubilee of Dubrovnik Summer Games, it is a perfect opportunity to come and see why it is so magnificent and unique, not just for the viewers but also for the performers.
